Steve Crist of the DRF let his thoughts be known on the closing of the pools proposal currently being look at in Kentucky.
This is a maddeningly frustrating issue, because there's a clear path to a palatable solution, but it requires the one commodity that the racing industry is least able to muster: cooperation. If every major track would agree to close betting earlier, there would be no negative business impact after a week or two of customers getting used to the new deadline.

No negative impact.....hmmmm.
I wonder why it is that very few, if any can understand that in betting racing, there are many ways in which handle is derived from.
I understand about conditional wagering even though I never use it. I understand why they have place and show wagering though I never use it. etc.
At most tracks the best time, and only time, to see the horses clearly and in a consistent fashion is when they are going behind/into the gate. I know it's hard to fathom and many people won't believe this or understand this but large amounts can be wagered just on this visual information.
Just an example....Let's say I like 12345 in a race and 1 is the favorite but I don't think I can get him out of the number, the way it stands the race is not playable. But if as the horses are going into the gate and I see anything I don't like about the 1 (washy, fighting being loaded, etc.) I will instantly throw him out as I'm usually looking for any reason to toss the favorite out, and make a $3000 bet in the race using just 2345 because the race became playable now that I tossed the 1 out.
Now there might not be a lot of people doing this, but I can assure there are some which I guess computer guys and others who don't do it seem to not be able to understand.
There are many other reasons which will cause handle to drop if this is implemented.
Saying there would be no negative business impact is just flat out moronic.
